The first World Challenge overseas expeditions to Russian Siberia will explore wild, unpopulated and rarely visited regions in the Altai region. This fascinating mountain area around Mt. Belukha (the highest mountain in Siberia at 4.506m) has been recently included in the UNESCO World Heritage List due to its unique beauty and variety of landscapes.
Arrival
Teams will fly in to Moscow and either make a stop there for a short break or continue by internal flight to Barnaul.
Teams will either take a bus or train to a base camp in the settlement of Tyungur, in the Mt. Belukha area. Unfortunately there are not many options for a team to travel in the Altai region by public transportation due to the small population of this mountain area. Accommodation is at a base camp which is situated amongst the picturesque surroundings of The Katun River (altitude 850m).
Trekking Phase
The team will need to purchase food for their 2 week trek, before they head deep in to the mountains and forests. Trekking will be between 5-8 hours a day, from 4 to 12 km.
The trekking will be wild and remote. The team can choose a route which will cross the area of Lake Ak-Kem, resting in the heart of the Altai Mountains. Here they can find one of the most beautiful spots for trekking in the world. The mystical tranquillity and the local beauty gives rise to the numerous legends of the Altai. The Altai boasts more than 6,000 lakes and thousands of rivers, many of which the team will pass.
The team will also have a chance to observe the many varieties of deer which populate Altai’s spacious valleys. Teams will be camping and spending time at altitudes over 3000m.
Climbing (2 days)
Please note we are currently in the process of researching the possibilities of climbing and horse trekking and therefore cannot confirm the below details at this stage.
When the team reach the bottom of Mt. Belukha – at the beautiful lake Ak-Kem (altitude 1.950m) – they may have the option of climbing the Ak-Kem glacier up to the plateau “Tomskie Nochevki” (3.000m). This is the highest point on Belukha, accessible for “beginners” in climbing.

Horse trekking
Project Phase
The project is likely to be at a local school or summer camp. The project work will involve physical manual work as the team are likely to be renovating one of the rooms of a school or teaching English to the students. The work will be carried out together with the team of children from the local area.
Rest & Relaxation
1. Rafting
There may be an option for two days rafting on the popular river of Altai – The Katun. The Katun River is 688 km long; it starts at its headwaters, Mount Belukha glacier and runs through high mountains, taiga forest and alpine meadows covered with high grass and flowers.
2. Sightseeing in Moscow
The team may decide to go to the world-known and UNESCO listed Red Square and Kremlin, visit beautiful Kremlin cathedrals or just walk or take a boat trip along the Moscow River. The team could visit Park Kolomenskoye – the summer residence of the Tsars since the 16th century. In the evening the team can enjoy an amazing performance at one of the Moscow circuses.
There may be a 3 day horse trek to Mt. Baida (2.070m). The route is very picturesque and offers a beautiful view over several mountain lakes and high mountain ridges. The landscape in this area is different from the scenery on the way up to Belukha Mountain. The team will find absolutely no one here!
