Dive Honduras

Honduras is located in Central America and is bordered by Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. It is the most mountainous country in Central America and encompasses the largest tract of remaining forest in the region. Contrasting with its highlands, Honduras also has a long Caribbean coastline, famous for its reefs and large areas of cloud and rainforest, with the remote and beautiful Mosquito Coast in the east. Honduras is a destination that is ideal for teams who want to experience traditional cultures, who want to learn to dive and also discover an environment with trekking possibilities to suit all levels.

Some possible expedition objectives are given below, please note these may alter between now and your expedition. The Expedition Programme Manager for Honduras will agree a suitable expedition itinerary for you, to best match the abilities and aspirations of your team.

Acclimatisation
Lake Yojoa
Lake Yojoa is a perfect location for acclimatising to the heat and humidity of Honduras. Exploring the lake and surrounding areas, you can visit the Pulhapanzak Waterfalls - the most impressive in the country and formerly an important cultural site for the ancient Maya - as well as two National Parks with varied day trekking options.

Cusuco
Little–visited Cusuco National Park is just a short distance outside of San Pedro Sula, but it protects a dense and rugged swath of pine and cloudforest. With a number of short 1-day treks plus a 2-day trek out of the park, Cusuco offers a good opportunity to get used to conditions that are similar to those on the Celaque trek.

Copan
Teams can explore the ancient Mayan ruins of Copan and the hills that surround them. The ruins are relatively modest in size, however they offer an incredible insight into the political and social structure of the Mayan civilisation and are a must for anyone visiting Honduras.

Main Trekking Phase
Celaque National Park
Teams can trek in the Celaque region in the west of the country where a challenging 5-day trek leads to the country’s highest peak, Cerro de las Minas (2,849m). Trekking through beautiful cloud forest, keen eyes may be lucky enough to spot a quetzal, toucan or even a jaguar. Relax after the trek in the natural hot springs in Gracias at the end of the trek, an ideal way to soothe aching limbs.

Lenca Country
The Lenca region offers some great hill walking opportunities and truly superb scenery. Teams can follow trails through small Lenca Indian communities, passing through coffee plantations, corn patches, pine covered ravines and fairly wild uncultivated country. The remains of an old Mayan roads and bridges can be seen along the way.

La Moskitia
The wild and beautiful jungles of La Moskitia in eastern Honduras provide teams with an exciting opportunity to explore one of the most remote regions in the country. Reached in two days by jeeps and dug out canoes from the Mosquito Coast, teams can explore the land of the Pech and Miskito Indians, who still live a largely traditional way of life in the jungles. To acclimatise to the jungle terrain teams complete short treks in the rainforest before a challenging 4-day climb up Pico Dama – a jungle clad peak with fabulous views.

Project
Whilst in Honduras, the team will have an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the indigenous people of Western Honduras. The projects in either the Lenca region or Copan are rewarding, involving basic construction work within a community or a school based project. Either way teams work alongside the local people and provide the opportunity to form strong cross cultural friendships.

Diving
Learn to dive in the beautiful Bay Islands where some of the world’s finest diving can be found. With miles of coral reef there are few better places to become a certified diver.

Rest and Relaxation
Honduras has a vast Caribbean coastline and the team may choose to visit Tela, where they can enjoy the natural beauty of its beaches and the exuberant tropical vegetation of the Punta Sal National Park, which offers great snorkelling. The Bay Islands off the coast of the mainland are also an option. Alternatively, white-water rafting in Pico Bonito National Park provides a more adventurous way of finishing the expedition.

Testimonials
“To be honest, I originally signed up for World Challenge for the sole benefit of my CV.  I had thought it would be more of a fun adventure, but over the whole month I was faced with so many physical and mental challenges I had never anticipated.  I can’t even begin to describe how appreciative I am of the expedition as it has helped me find my feet, develop important skills and grow in so many ways.  It was undoubtedly a struggle, but I pulled through.  I have a true sense of achievement which I never could envisage at the start.  THANK YOU.”
