The Mountain Leader Award (Summer) offers the opportunity to gain technical competence in leading walkers in the hills. The scheme is intended for those leading groups in mountains or remote country where walkers are dependant upon themselves. It is the combination of technical skills, wide experience and personal qualities which forms the basis for effective group management.
The scheme is recognised by the Health and Safety Executive and the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority as being an appropriate award for 'trekking ' in summer conditions.
The scheme consists of six stages:
- Gain personal hill-walking experience
- Registration and issue of log book
- Training course
- Consolidation period
- Assessment course
- Continuing logbook experience and any relevant additional training

Day 1 Introductions/clothing and equipment talk
Day 2 Low level walk in Peak District, navigation and leadership; mountain weather
Day 3 High level walk/security on steep ground; access and conservation lecture; mountain hazards and emergency procedures
Day 4 Using a rope, river crossing; expedition planning
Day 5 Prepare for expedition; depart on expedition
Day 6 Expedition continues
Day 7 Return from expedition; Individual reviews; course conclusion outline
ML (Summer) training course details
Dates: 21st – 27th October 2007
17th – 23rd February 2008
6th – 12th April 2008
25th – 31st May 2008 – this course will run in Penrith
Location: The Leadership and Development Centre, Buxton, Derbyshire.
2 nights spent on expedition, usually in North Wales or the Lake District.
Course cost: £280.00 including accommodation, full board and VAT (before 1st September)
£310.00 including accommodation, full board and VAT (after 1st September)
